High Speed 2 (HS2), the new 350+ kilometre-per-hour, high-speed rail network that will run through London, Manchester, and Leeds, linking eight of Britain’s 10 largest cities, is one of the most complex railway projects that the United Kingdom has undertaken. Danny Sullivan is proud to announce we are working across every section of HS2.
HS2 Area Central C1, C2 and C3
C1: Chiltern Tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct – Align JV (Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick, Sir Robert McAlpine)
C2: North Portal Chiltern Tunnels to Brackley – CEK JV (Carillion Construction Ltd, Eiffage Genie Civil SA, Kier Infrastructure and Overseas Ltd)
C3: Brackley to South Portal of Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel – CEK JV (Carillion Construction Ltd, Eiffage Genie Civil SA, Kier Infrastructure and Overseas Ltd)
C1 Chiltern Tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct – Bouygues Construction, Volker Fitzpatrick, Sir Robert McAlpine (Align JV) In July 2017 the Align joint venture was awarded the C1 package of the UK High Speed 2 line (HS2). C1 consists of 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure in a rural environment. This will include a 3.37km viaduct, 16.04km twin-bored tunnel and five vent shafts handling both intervention and tunnel ventilation facilities.
C2 & C3 North Portal Chiltern Tunnels to Brackley and Brackley to South Portal of Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel – the Eiffage Kier joint venture, recently joined by two new partners Ferrovial Agroman and BAM Nuttall (EKFB), is pleased that it has received Notice to Proceed (NTP) from HS2 Limited, enabling it to commence the full detailed design and construction of 80km of Phase 1 of the HS2 railway (the route from London – Birmingham). Throughout construction of the project, the partners will deliver Lots C2 and C3 of the HS2 high-speed railway. This 80km section runs between the Chilterns to Warwickshire and includes 15 viaducts, 5km of green tunnels, 22km of road diversions, 67 overbridges and 30 million cubic metres of excavation. The total value of the section, including the design and development work already completed, is £2,269m.
HS2 Area South S1 and S2
S1: Euston Tunnels and Approaches – SCS JV (Skanska Construction UK Ltd, Costain Ltd, STRABAG AG)
S2: Northolt Tunnels – SCS JV (Skanska Construction UK Ltd, Costain Ltd, STRABAG AG)
Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS) was awarded the civil works contract for the 250-kilometer southern section between London and Birmingham. As part of the contract, SCS needed to formulate a conceptual design scheme for the first 26 kilometres to be delivered within 14 months. Featuring 20 kilometres of tunnels, several bridges, and five kilometres of earthworks, the estimated GBP 1.5 billion project required the international, multidiscipline design team to optimize digital efficiencies and accommodate the client’s challenging data requirements.
HS2 Area North N1 and N2
N1: Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel to Delta Junction and Birmingham Spur – BBV JV (Balfour Beatty Group Ltd, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, VINCI Construction UK Ltd, VINCI Construction Terrassement)
N2: Delta Junction to WCML Tie-In – BBV JV (Balfour Beatty Group Ltd, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, VINCI Construction UK Ltd, VINCI Construction Terrassement
Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV), are building the West Midlands section of HS2’s Phase One route, spanning approximately 80km from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire. They will be employing thousands of people in the area to design and build the civil infrastructure for HS2 through the West Midlands area.
- 42 viaducts totalling over 11km, 66 overbridges,
- More than 35 cuttings reaching over 30km
- 56 culverts and other underbridges
- 66 embankments reaching over 33km
- Building four motorway crossings requiring box structures and six interfaces with the existing rail requiring both dive-under and overbridge structures.
